The punishments people received for even minor "crimes" was unbelievable. Some folk were transported to Australia (Tasmania is part of Oz) for stealing a loaf of bread! Not only were they transported to the other side of the world, they had to do 7 years of hard labour once they got there! I was really scared when I went round the cells - it was eerie and you could imagine what it must have been like cooped up in a tiny space only 2 metres square.
