Seeing the Nazca ( or Nasca) lines from the air made me realize how big the shapes are and how walking round them would have taken ages! . Why they are there and who made them is still a mystery, but one of the ideas is that people walked around the shapes in a procession or a ritual. As they walked, so the top layer of stones got pushed to one side and this exposed the layer beneath which remains untouched. This is just one idea; the only problem is how did they manage to draw them so large in the first place when they couldn't see them from the air? Remember there were no 'planes when they were made!

These paths were certainly different to what we think of as journeys, but they were important journeys to the ones who made them. Let's have a closer look...

In this activity we are going to use the Nasca Lines as the start of our Art project on 'Journeys'. Use the following Internet sites to do your research. Have you got your sketchbook ready? Do some quick sketches as you explore the sites.

SITE 1. This site will give you a picture with lots of the shapes and a list of the animals.

SITE 2. This is the BBC site and gives you some good pictures and information

SITE 3. This site will give you ideas of what other children have done.

Now that you have got some ideas to work with, use the Planning Sheet to develop your ideas further
