Our guide told us that there were 7,000 people on the island originally but food became short and tribal battles reduced the population. Then slave ships arrived and took a lot of people to North and South America. When they eventually returned they brought back diseases like cholera and this reduced the population to 110. Today there are 3,000 people and everyone knows everyone else, which makes it a friendly place.
