That night we were all in bed really early and managed to get up for the journey the following day. As we drove round the island we could see how many Moai there really are. Lots of them have fallen over and they are not entirely sure whether they were pushed down during tribal warfare or whether they have fallen down during an earthquake. All the Moai face inland. apart from one line of seven which are suppose to face the Marquesas Islands. The biggest line of standing Moai is a line of fifteen re-erected by a Japanese company.

We also visited the quarry where the Moai were made. There were loads here, some still attached to the rock, unfinished, and some only a short distance from the quarry. Seeing the size of these huge stone statues it seems amazing that they were able to move and erect the Moai from the quarry to different parts of the island. This is one of the many mysteries which are still unsolved.
