This sheet might help you with the many decisions you need to make before starting on the making of your container.

Step 1

Research

Finding out and getting information.

The Columbus Urgent Action for December has loads of ideas on shapes of conatiners and surface designs. Use these and other ideas from books and Internet sites to think abpout shapes,

Record

Make simple drawings of the shapes and patterns you like in your sketch book.

Step 2

Use ICT

To help you with the pattern and motifs, use the Symmetry tool in Dazzle/colour Magic/Fresco

or any other paint program and print out. You could use this print-out to help you with putting your design on to your conatainer.

Think carefully about colour combinations. Try out different colour schemes in your sketch book.

Step 3

Ideas on making the container

You could choose any material to make your container - plastic pop bottles, cane, raffia, papier mache. Covering pop bottles with layers of papier mache is a good way to shape the container, and it can be painted with white emulsion ready for paint or collage to be applied. A basket shape could be made of a circle of card with the radii cut, making it suitable for waeving.

Two decisions need to be made at this point:

What is the shape of your container going to be?

Are you decorating it by painting, weaving or collage?
